Abdel Karim Al Sultan

Abdel Karim Al Sultan, a 21-year-old, grew up facing the hardships of displacement. His family, originally from rural Idlib, Syria, was forced to flee during the Syrian crisis in 2011. Struggling to meet their daily needs, they endured immense psychological and financial hardships. Despite these obstacles, Abdel Karim’s greatest motivation was finding a way to continue his education while living in a refugee camp under dire conditions.

Months after their displacement, Abdel Karim was given an opportunity to learn. However, his excitement quickly faded when he discovered that the educational environment lacked essential resources, including qualified teachers. Determined to improve the situation, he repeatedly voiced his concerns to the organization managing the educational project in the Bekaa region. Unfortunately, his efforts went unanswered. As time passed, he found himself unable to recognize even basic letters in Arabic or English.

Forced by circumstances, Abdel Karim sought work to support his family. However, with no skills or professional experience, his opportunities were limited. Days turned into months until the Lebanese Organization for Studies and Training (LOST) launched the NAFAAL Project. Funded by the Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair Refugee Education Fund, this initiative provided free training courses in life skills, English, agriculture, IT, and finance, with transportation included.

Abdel Karim eventually decided to enroll in the program. His commitment and enthusiasm grew as he attended daily sessions, determined to transform his life. Through the program, he acquired a wide range of skills, particularly in agriculture. He learned techniques such as pruning, grafting, planting various vegetables, and identifying fungal diseases. He also developed proficiency in English and essential life skills, enabling him to engage confidently within his community. The program gave him the tools to rebuild his future.

Today, Abdel Karim is a shining example of resilience and growth. He has transitioned from a young man burdened by despair and limited prospects to a skilled, hopeful individual ready to seize job opportunities in agriculture. His story is a testament to the transformative power of education and training, demonstrating that with determination and support, even the most challenging circumstances can be overcome.
